Attention teachers: Tell us your funniest stories

In honor of teacher appreciation week in May, we are calling on all educators to tell us their funniest stories. We commend you for your hard work and dedication. We also know that when you’re working with kids, hysterical stuff is bound to happen. And from what we’ve heard, there’s plenty to tell.

Ruby Winter, who taught third grade for 34 years before retiring in 1997 from the former Memorial Elementary School in Barberton, shared this:

Third-graders love show-and-tell day, Winter said. It’s a time for them to share and boast a little.

Bobby had been pestering Winter to take his turn. When it was time, he retrieved a bag from beneath his desk and pulled out two items.

“These are my new pop guns! Who wants to be my opponent?” he asked.

Of course, all hands flew up. He chose a pal and shared some of his cotton bullets with him. The two went at it — eventually engaging the rest of the giggling children.

“Bobby was so proud of his new toy that he promised to bring all the kids their own the next day,” Winter recalled. “When I asked him where he got his pop guns, he bashfully looked at the floor and said there was a whole box of them in his mommy’s bathroom cupboard.”

Bobby couldn’t fulfill his promise, because Mommy banned him from taking any more of her Tampax to school.

Now it’s your turn. If you are a teacher, or ever have been, we want to hear from you no later than Wednesday, April 24.

Include your name, the grade and school in which you teach, whether you are still in the classroom or retired, your hometown, telephone number and a story, no longer than 300 words. (Use kids’ first names only.)

Send to reporter Kim Hone-McMahan at kmcmahan@thebeaconjournal.com, with the subject line “Teacher stories,” or mail to her at the Akron Beacon Journal, 44 E. Exchange St., Akron, OH 44309.

We will pick some of our favorites and run them on May 5 in the newspaper.
