Test your soil
Good gardens start with good soil.
Now’s a good time to have yours tested.
Many laboratories can perform soil tests, but the Ohio State University Extension often recommends the lab operated by the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. Information is at http://soiltest.umass.edu.
A standard soil test usually measure your soil’s pH and various nutrients. Having that information allows you to add what your soil needs, and only what it needs.
Most laboratories have information online about how to submit a soil sample, or they’ll send you a container and instructions. Usually you’re instructed to gather about a cupful of soil from various spots in your garden, let it dry over night, put it in a small plastic bag and send it off to the lab.
