History comes alive

One of TV’s history detectives will share his experiences during a talk Wednesday in Hudson.

Wes Cowan, who unravels the mysteries behind historical objects on the PBS series History Detectives and is also an appraiser on Antiques Roadshow, will speak at 7 p.m. at the Hudson Library & Historical Society, 96 Library St.

Cowan owns Cowan’s Auctions in Cincinnati, which opened an office in the Cleveland suburb of Warrensville Heights this summer. He is a licensed auctioneer in Ohio and holds a doctorate in anthropology.

The program is free. Register at http://hudsonlibrary.org or 330-653-6658, ext. 1010.

Wilco (The Concert)

Beloved alternative rock band Wilco will perform its first-ever concert in Akron at the Civic Theatre on Thursday. The band’s most recent studio album, The Whole Love, was released in 2011, meaning there’s no need to push the new record. Plus, since the Civic show will be the band’s first time playing in Akron, there’s no need to churn the set list, meaning it should be wide open. Opening for Wilco will be singer/songwriter Bahamas.

Tickets are $35-$59.50. Call 330-253-2488 or go to www.akroncivic.com for more information.

Salsa smackdown

The Downtown Akron Partnership sponsors its annual Salsa Making Contest at 11:30 a.m. Friday at the farmers market at Lock 3 Park off Main Street in downtown Akron.

Turn in your salsa on Wednesday or Thursday at the Downtown Akron Partnership office at Greystone Hall, 103 S. High St., or by 11 a.m. at the market Friday. Categories are “Mild & Mellow,” “Get Spicy,” “Fruity” and “Surprise Us.” Prizes will be awarded. For more information, call 330-374-7618 or email Linda Fry at lfry@downtownakron.com. Go to www.downtownakron.com for applications.

Model behavior

The Price Is Right is having a national search for a male model to appear on the show the week of Dec. 15. Casting calls will be in Los Angeles, Boston, Philadelphia and Dallas. (Cleveland is not on the list yet, but should be, since Drew Carey hosts the series.) If travel is not an option, you can enter online by submitting a video demonstrating your standout modeling skills beginning Saturday. You must be 18 or older.

Semifinalists will compete in Los Angeles on Sept. 30, with judging based on their sense of humor, red-carpet skills and “of course, how to model a car,” CBS says. Then there will be a six-episode competition on www.priceisright.com, leading to a final three contenders and a fan vote online. The winner will be announced Dec. 8, then appear on the show for a week starting Dec. 15.

Official rules can be found on www.cbs.com and www.priceisright.com.
