Food writers Jane and Michael Stern are out with the ninth edition of their classic book Roadfood, and plenty of local eateries are once again included.
The Sterns have written more than 40 books, are weekly guests on The Splendid Table on public radio, and are regular contributors to a number of food magazines and other publications.
Local restaurants included in the new book are Al’s Corner Restaurant in Barberton, Babushka’s Kitchen in Independence, Belgrade Gardens in Barberton, Cathedral Buffet in Cuyahoga Falls, Flury’s Café in Cuyahoga Falls, Kennedy’s B.B.Q. in Canton, New Era Restaurant in Akron, Swenson’s on South Hawkins in Akron, Taggarts Ice Cream in Canton and White House Chicken in Barberton.
The book includes 900 listings across the country. It also includes an honor roll of the top 100 spots not to miss. Congratulations to the one local eatery making that list: Al’s Corner Restaurant.
Pav’s comes to Green
Pav’s Creamery will be opening a second location in Green as part of the new Heritage Crossing complex.
Unlike Pav’s original location in Coventry Township, the Green shop will be open year round, with inside and outside seating, and will serve homemade frozen custard, ice cream, sorbets and cakes. There also will be new items on the menu, including crepes and Belgian waffles.
In a news release, Pav’s co-owner Nik Pappas, son of Pav’s owner Michelle Micochero, said his family had been considering either franchising the brand or opening a second location, but had not been able to find a suitable location until Heritage Crossing came along.
The new shop will feature a large outside patio with a fire pit, and is expected to open in July.
This is the first time Pav’s has expanded beyond its original Portage Lakes location, which opened in the early 1950s as a Tasty Freeze, and reopens for the season on March 1.
Closed for remodeling
House of Hunan, 2717 W. Market St., Fairlawn, is closed for remodeling for about the next six weeks, owner Cheryl Suen said.
The Fairlawn location will still be open for delivery and carryout orders. Suen said customers looking for a sit-down meal are encouraged to visit Hunan’s Akron or Medina locations. For any customers who show up at Fairlawn only to discover they can’t be seated, Suen said staff will present them with a coupon good for 20 percent off their meal at either Akron or Medina.
She said remodeling should be completed by mid-March.
