Cookbook: ‘Wintersweet’

If you’re looking for a book to cozy up to this season, Wintersweet: Seasonal Desserts to Warm the Home (Running Press, 2013; $30) is it. There’s one photo of sugared fresh cranberries that’s worth the price. Though you know it’s not icy snow, the sugar glints like wintery crystals and makes you want to pull your coat a little tighter.

This is one lovely book and full of seasonal recipes that celebrate the chilliest time of year.

Author Tammy Donroe Inman, formerly of Cook’s Illustrated magazine, has a simple philosophy that translates in a sophisticated manner. Her Pear Cardamom Crostada — a free-form pie — would be fitting for any gathering, likewise Salted Dark Chocolate Tart With Pistachios.

Inman’s idea of desserts is global with sweet offerings from many places, plus you’ll find instruction on serving meal-ending cheeses, too. There are recipes for sauces that could be paired with simple pound cake or ice cream, and plenty of citrus desserts.
