Christians fixed their eyes on the Cross at Calvary — contemplating the cost that Jesus paid for their salvation — during solemn services on Good Friday.
At Holy Family Parish in Stow, the faith community gathered to commemorate the passion and death of Jesus on the cross in preparation for Easter Sunday. The special liturgy included the reading of the Passion from the Gospel of John, a series of intercessory prayers, veneration of the cross and Holy Communion.
Because no Mass is celebrated on Good Friday in the Roman Catholic tradition, hosts from the Mass of the Lord’s Supper on Holy Thursday are distributed during Good Friday services.
Good Friday is the day Christians commemorate the crucifixion and death of Jesus. It culminates a number of events in Holy Week, including the triumphant return of Jesus to Jerusalem on Palm Sunday; the washing of the disciples feet and the Last Supper on Maundy Thursday.
Although Holy Week is a sorrowful time when Christians commemorate the Passion of Christ, it also anticipates the joy of Easter.
