Talk with filmmaker
Oscar-winning filmmaker Sarah Kernochan will answer questions after showings of two of her movies at the Cleveland Institute of Art Cinematheque on Saturday. First, at 5:30 p.m., is 1991’s Impromptu, about the relationship between writer George Sand (Judy Davis) and composer Frederic Chopin (Hugh Grant); Kernochan wrote the screenplay and her husband, James Lapine, directed. (Lapine is also a Tony-winning stage director.) At 8:30 p.m. will be the 1972 documentary Marjoe, which she co-directed and co-produced, about evangelist (and later actor) Marjoe Gortner. Kernochan won her first Oscar when Marjoe was named best feature-length documentary; she won a second as co-director of the short documentary Thoth. Plant some peas
St. Patrick’s Day is a day for green — peas, that is.
Today is the traditional day for planting peas. For best results, though, you should rely on the soil, not the calendar. You can plant peas when the soil is workable and not too wet.
Ohio State University’s fact sheet on peas advises sowing seeds about 1 inch deep and 2 inches apart. Plant low-growing varieties in rows 18 to 24 inches apart. For climbers, allow 3 feet between rows, or plant two rows 6 inches apart on either side of a trellis.
More information can be found on the university’s Ohioline website, http://ohioline.osu.edu. Click on “Yard & Garden” and then “Vegetables” to find information on growing and caring for peas and beans.
Get your seats
The Kent Stage will celebrate its 11th anniversary next Sunday with a show by Rita Coolidge, the Grammy-winning 1970s easy-listening songstress who had four consecutive top 25 hits in 1977-78. The honey-voiced Coolidge, who also recorded critically acclaimed albums with Kris Kristofferson, ruled the charts with her versions of Jackie Wilson’s (Your Love Keeps Lifting Me) Higher and Higher, Boz Scaggs’ We’re All Alone and The Temptations’ The Way You Do The Things You Do.
Coolidge will perform at 8 p.m. and tickets are $33.50-$43.50. The Kent Stage is located at 175 E. Main St. Call 330-677-5005 or go to www.kentstage.com.
