In the midst of its 140th anniversary of printing, the Catholic Universe Bulletin newspaper has announced that it will cease publication.
Bishop Richard Lennon, of the Cleveland Diocese, announced the Catholic Universe Bulletin will end its print edition sometime in 2015.
“After serious and lengthy assessment, I wish to inform you that I will soon begin researching an alternative to our 140-year-old Diocesan newspaper,the Catholic Universe Bulletin,” Lennon said in a statement “This is no easy decision but it follows extensive research conducted in conjunction with the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops initiative for strategic Diocesan communications planning.”
Lennon said readership of the bi-weekly Catholic Universe Bulletin has been in decline for quite some time and there was no evidence that trend will reverse.
“The profound changes in how people receive their information have had a great bearing on the effectiveness of a bi-weekly newspaper,” Lennon said.
The bishop will create a task force to explore alternatives to find a financially viable alternative to spread the news of the eight-county diocese that includes Summit County.
