WADSWORTH: After 50 years underground, a time capsule buried at Woodlawn Cemetery in 1964 was opened Saturday to a crowd eagerly awaiting a view.

The items as part of the city’s bicentennial celebration included a copy of the Akron Beacon Journal, the Plain Dealer and the News Banner, a local newspaper of the time.

Also, a copy of the front page of the Beacon Journal coverage of the John F. Kennedy assassination and the book The Torch is Passed — a book concerning the assassination — as well as a Kennedy half-dollar were among the contents.

A Wadsworth High annual, a report of the Wadsworth hospital, a map of the city, a copy of Wadsworth Heritage, rules of the Soap Box Derby, a copy of TV Guide and a Medina County Directory were also part of the memorabilia.

Literature concerning the New York World’s Fair was featured. Miss Wadsworth of that year won a free trip to the fair.

Commemorative items from the 1964 celebration of the 150th anniversary of the founding of Wadsworth included a wooden nickel, a bow tie and a copy of Brothers of the Beard.

The contents are to be displayed at Dave Cordas’ studio at 110 High St. and then transferred to the Wadsworth Library for safekeeping.

Bicentennial events scheduled for the remainder of the year include a historical speaker, a historical tea, Wadsworth Day at Progressive Field, a tailgate party, Thriller in the Square, the men’s chorus, a bicentennial ball and a community sing-a-long. Specific times for future events can be found at www.Wadsworth200.com.
