Atomic drama
Tonight brings the series premiere of Manhattan, a drama about the development of the atomic bomb in the Manhattan Project, at 9 p.m. on WGN America with an extra showing at 11 p.m. on WJW (Channel 8), which is owned by the same company as WGN.
If that whets your appetite for other screen versions of the story, you may want to look for other titles. Among them: Fat Man and Little Boy (1989), with Paul Newman as Leslie Groves, the general who oversaw the project, and Dwight Schultz as the brilliant scientist J. Robert Oppenheimer.
Other possibilities include Day One (also 1989), with Brian Dennehy as Groves and David Strathairn as Oppenheimer, and Oppenheimer (1980), a miniseries with Sam Waterston in the title role and Manning Redwood as Groves. Day One, Fat Man and Little Boy and Oppenheimer are all on DVD. Fat Man and Day One are also on Amazon Instant Video and iTunes.
Get growing
It’s midsummer already, but it’s not too late to start a food garden.
Information on crops you can plant now, such as greens and garlic, will be the focus of the Growing Hope Summer Celebration from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Crouse Community Learning Center, 1000 Diagonal Road, Akron. The celebration will also include a salsa contest — the condiment, not the dance — and an opportunity to tour the Crouse school garden.
Participants are asked to bring a healthful snack to share.
The event is presented by the Summit Food Policy Coalition. More information is at http://summitfpc.wordpress.com.
Blossom is goin’ country
One of the biggest groups in country of the past decade, Rascal Flatts, will be bringing its slick tunes, including songs from their 2014 album Rewind, to Blossom Music Center (1145 W. Steels Corners Road, Cuyahoga Falls) on Friday night.
Also on the bill are young country trio Gloriana and former pop singer/songwriter Sheryl Crow, who released her first country album Feels Like Home in 2013, which peaked in the Billboard top 10 and helped Crow convince country audiences that they should pay her attention. Tickets $36-$76 at www.livenation.com.
