Old house 911
Is your old house ailing?
The Building Doctors may be able to prescribe a remedy.
The “doctors” — historical preservation experts from Ohio History Connection — will be in Richfield on Thursday and Friday to help owners of older buildings. They’ll address common maintenance issues during a clinic at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Historical Museum of Richfield, 3907 Broadview Road, and then make house calls by appointment from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday to consult with owners of buildings within five miles of Richfield’s center.
Both events are free, but advance registration is required. To sign up, visit http://tinyurl.com/buildingdoctor2014 or call 800-499-2470.
Hive happening
Get all the buzz on honeybees during the family-oriented Bee Festival from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at Medina Library, 210 S. Broadway.
Among the events planned are the opening of a hive at 11:30, a beekeeping show-and-tell at noon and a bee costume parade for kids at 12:30. Visitors can also taste honey, get beekeeping information, engage in children’s activities and buy bee-related products such as soaps, jewelry and jellies.
Admission is free. Information is at www.mcdl.info/BeeFest.
‘Million Dollar’ musical
Hey, classic rock ’n’ roll fans, have you ever wondered what it would’ve been like to see and hear music legends Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis and Carl Perkins all playing together?
Well, you can’t because 75 percent of them are dead (though “The Killer” is reportedly working on a new album). But through July 27 at the Ohio Theatre in Cleveland, fans can experience a reasonable facsimile of that magical session with Million Dollar Quartet, the Tony Award-winning Broadway jukebox musical, based on the legendary 1956 recording session in which Sam Phillips of Sun Records brought that fearsome foursome together for a jam.
Songs include classics by all the artists such as Blue Suede Shoes, That’s All Right, Sixteen Tons, Great Balls of Fire, I Walk the Line and Whole Lotta Shakin’ Goin’ On. Tickets are $10-$75 at 216-241-6000, 866-546-1353, or www.playhousesquare.com.
Gonzo moviegoing
It’s not too late to catch Akron’s showings of the movie Entertainment Weekly called “a blockbuster in disguise,” and possibly “the most gonzo movie to hit U.S. theaters this summer.” And one that has a 94 percent positive rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
That’s Snowpiercer, the saga of people living on a moving train in a postapocalyptic world. The cast includes Octavia Spencer, Tilda Swinton and Captain America’s Chris Evans. Remaining showings at Akron’s Nightlight Cinema are scheduled for 6:45 p.m. today, Wednesday and Thursday.
