The To-Do List — week of July 6

Birthday bash

The Summit County Historical Society is throwing a birthday party, and you’re invited.

The society is sponsoring a 90th Anniversary Celebration from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday at Perkins Stone Mansion, 550 Copley Road, Akron. The party includes free antique evaluations (one item per person), tours of the mansion and the John Brown House, music, antique cars, a hobo camp, carnival games and more.

Admission is free, and food will be available for sale.

Details are at http://summithistory.org.

Free garden tour

Gardens all around Cleveland are opening their gates to visitors next weekend for GardenWalk Cleveland, a free, self-guided tour.

The event features gardens, urban farms, vineyards and orchards in several neighborhoods of the city. Hours are 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and next Sunday.

Free guides are available at all Dave’s Markets and Petitti Garden Centers, or visit www.gardenwalkcleveland.org for tour maps and information.

Wine and folk

Hale Farm & Village has added a new element — wine — to its 40-year-old Music in the Valley Folk Festival. The festival, which runs from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and next Sunday, will have a wine garden featuring Maize Valley Winery, Troutman Vineyards and Winery, the Winery at Wolf Creek and Myrddin Winery.

Cost is $10 for adults, $5 for children 3-12, and free for Western Reserve Historical Society members. See www.halefarm.org or call 330-666-3711.

‘Vicious’ fun

Acclaimed actors Ian McKellen and Derek Jacobi are unleashing their inner farceurs in Vicious, the banter-and-insult-laden British comedy now airing on public television. The series’ second episode airs at 10:30 tonight on WVIZ (Channel 25) and WNEO/WEAO (Channels 45/49).McKellen and Jacobi play actors who are also a longtime couple. They snipe at each other but remain in love. While it’s old-school in its joking format and loud audience reactions, the cast — which also includes the marvelous Frances de la Tour and Game of Thrones’ Iwan Rheon — makes it work most of the time. The seven episodes will also be on DVD on Tuesday.

Let’s groove tonight

Earth, Wind & Fire have been making soulful, funky and spiritually uplifting music for more than 40 years. So when they hit the stage at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at Evans Amphitheater in Cain Park in Cleveland Heights, they’ll have a set list packed with hits and songs that have embedded themselves in people’s lives. Among the favorites are Shining Star, Sing a Song, Got to Get You into My Life, September, Boogie Wonderland and Let’s Groove.

Tickets are $52.50-$99.50 and can be purchased at www.ticketmaster.com.
