The To-Do List — May 18

Walking Massillon

Take a leisurely stroll today through the history and architecture of Massillon’s 188-year-old downtown.

Learn about the canal, streetcars, early businesses, National Register sites, and the people who built the town. Stories will include the fire that destroyed First Methodist Church, human flies, the Washington’s birthday flood, and the airplane that was built in the upper floor of a downtown building. The walk takes about two hours, depending on the personal recollections that participants often add to the tour.

Meet at 2 p.m. outside the Massillon Museum, 121 Lincoln Way E. Reservations are not necessary. The $7 fee may be paid at the beginning. Free parking is available on city streets. In case of rain, the tour will be canceled.

Historical barn tour

Tour six of the barns that were once part of Barberton founder O.C. Barber’s rural spread during this afternoon’s Anna Dean Farm Walking Tour.

The tour will take participants inside the pig, brooder, feed and colt barns, as well as the heating house and Barn No. 1, a former cattle barn that is now the headquarters of Aris Horticulture. Visitors will also visit the grounds of the demolished mansion for the dedication of a new park containing a wishing well where Barber loved to sit and reflect.

The tour starts at 1:30 p.m. at the Piggery, 248 E. Robinson Ave. Admission and parking are free.

25 or 6 to Northfield

For many music fans, the band Chicago is best known as the backing group for former lead singer Peter Cetera’s ballads. But folks in the funky know remember that, in its early days, Chicago was a pretty hard-charging, horn-heavy, jazz/funk/rock outfit cranking out hits and grooves such as I’m A Man, 25 or 6 to 4 and Street Player.

Cetera is long gone from the current iteration of the band that will perform at the Hard Rock Rocksino in Northfield at 8 p.m. Tuesday, but the horns are still there, so it should be a groovy night. Tickets are $56-$110 and can be purchased at www.ticket
master.com or 800-653-8000.

One/two-woman show

Actress Vicki Lawrence, especially known as “Mama” Thelma Harper on The Carol Burnett Show and Mama’s Family, comes to the Canton Palace Theatre at 2 and 7:30 p.m. Tuesday with Vicki Lawrence & Mama: A Two-Woman Show.

The show, which Lawrence has toured with for several years, consists of “a mixture of stand-up comedy, music and observations about real life,” the Palace says.

Tickets are $44-$54. For more information, contact the Palace at 330-454-8172 or info@canton
palacetheatre.org, or go to www.cantonpalacetheatre.org.
