From skilled hands

Handmade is hot.

That’s what you’ll find at the Avant-Garde Art & Craft Show, open from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. today at St. George Fellowship Centre, 3204 Ridgewood Road in Copley Township.

The show offers home decor items, fashion accessories, sweet treats and other unusual goods made by Ohio artisans. Admission is $3, and children younger than 12 are admitted free.

A portion of the proceeds goes to charity.

Details are at www.avantgardeshows.com.

Comic in Cleveland

He’s one of the most popular comedians in the world, having broken attendance records for stand-up comedians by selling out arenas in Australia, his native Toronto and London. But if you’re not a comedy nerd, the name Russell Peters may mean little to you.

See what the fuss is about when Peters appears at 8 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday at Hilarities, 2035 E. Fourth St., Cleveland. Tickets are $33-$38 and available at 216-736-4242.

Oscar documentary

The documentary And the Oscar Goes To makes a move from the small screen (where it aired on Turner Classic Movies) to the big ones when Fathom Events presents it at 2 p.m. today and at 2 and 7 p.m. Wednesday in select theaters. (Local venues include Cinemark Valley View, Cinemark Tinseltown USA in North Carton and Regal Crocker Park.)

The production includes clips from Oscar-winning films and interviews with such winners as Steven Spielberg, George Clooney, Helen Mirren, Tom Hanks and Jennifer Hudson. The screenings also have a special introduction by Oscars chronicler and TCM personality Robert Osborne.

Acoustic jam at academy

FolkNite is at 7 p.m. the second Sunday of every month at Peninsula Art Academy, a casual acoustic open-jam with Greg Canda.

Everyone will have the chance to play and sing together. There will be a computer and projector set up, so bring music and lyrics on a USB drive. Bring your own food and drinks.

The art academy is at 1600 Mill St. W, Peninsula, and admission is free. For more information, and to learn about other events, call 330-657-2248.
