Floral show at Stan Hywet
Banish your bad memories of winter and surround yourself with spring at Inspiration in Bloom, a floral show next weekend at Stan Hywet Hall & Gardens.
The Manor House will be filled with fresh arrangements created by florists, floral designers and garden club members. The show is open Friday through next Sunday at Stan Hywet, 714 N. Portage Path, Akron. That’s also the first weekend of the season for the historical estate, which reopens Tuesday.

Off the movie path
The Cleveland Institute of Art Cinematheque has special programs this week. On Saturday, it will present a nuclear-warfare double feature of the original Fail-Safe at 5:15 p.m. and Dr. Strangelove: Or How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb at 7:30. Dr. Strangelove, from director Stanley Kubrick, is a dark comedy while Fail-Safe, directed by Sidney Lumet, is a more earnest and somber piece. Dr. Strangelove is also showing at 9:45 p.m. Friday.
At 6:45 p.m. Thursday, the Cinematheque will show the eight short films of Bruce Checefsky, a photographer and director of the Reinberger Galleries at the institute. Checefsky “carved out a unique niche for himself by reimagining and making abstract and avant-garde Eastern European shorts from the 1920s to the 1940s,” the Cinematheque says. Checefsky will do a Q&A after the screening.
Three area theaters will offer The Silence of the Lambs at 7 p.m. today and 2 and 7 p.m. Wednesday: Cinemark Tinseltown USA in Jackson Township, Cinemark Valley View and Regal Crocker Park. The 1991 thriller was the most recent movie to win all of the so-called Big Five Oscars: picture, director (Jonathan Demme), actor (Anthony Hopkins), actress (Jodie Foster) and screenplay (adapted from Thomas Harris’ book by Ted Tally). Only three films have managed this sweep; the others are It Happened One Night and One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest.
Divining the future
The Kent Paranormal Festival is next weekend at the Kent Stage, 175 E. Main St.
The two-day event, beginning Saturday, is packed with psychic and paranormal presentations, readings, vendors, ghost hunts, ghost walks and a special presentation by author and medium James Van Praagh.
The doors to the Kent Stage will open at 9 a.m. Saturday and 9:30 a.m. Sunday for registration and the opportunity to browse vendor booths.
Included in the cost of the ticket, which is $10 for one day or $15 for both days, is admission for presentations, vendors and book signings. The Sunday appearance by Van Praagh requires a separate ticket, starting at $35.
