Photo workshops at zoo
If you are a beginning photographer, intermediate, or kid 8 to 15 years old, join others on Saturday at the Akron Zoo, 500 Edgewood Ave., for a photo workshop.
Start by working with photo expert Dave Shoenfelt for classroom instruction, then go into the park and try your skills. Shoenfelt will be on hand while you are snapping your favorite subjects.
Workshops for beginning photographers start at 8 a.m., intermediate at 10:30 a.m. and kids 8 to 15 at 2 p.m. Cost for each workshop is $20 and reservations are required.
To register, call 330-375-2550 or visit www.akronzoo.org. To get more information about which workshop might work best for you, email Shoenfelt at info@shoenfelt.com.
Elton John at movies
Elton John fans will want to hit the Regal Montrose Stadium 12 (4020 Medina Road) or Hudson Cinemas 10 (5339 Darrow Road) at 7 p.m. Wednesday for a screening of Elton John: The Million Dollar Piano. The 151-minute concert movie was filmed during John's perpetually sold-out residency at The Colosseum in Las Vegas, which has grossed more than $42 million according to Billboard.
The film is filled with the expected hits from John's illustrious near-50-year career, including Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, the concert-opening The Bitch is Back and Philadelphia Freedom. The piano of the title actually did cost $1 million and is outfitted with a glass top and 68 LED video screens that flash images throughout the concert. Tickets are $15 at www.fathomevents.com.
Succulents show
It’s spring. Time when a gardener’s thoughts turn to cacti.
Well, maybe not. But surprisingly, this is a good week to learn about succulents.
Today the Midwest Cactus & Succulent Society is having its show and sale from noon to 5 p.m. at Cleveland Botanical Garden. The show is included in the garden’s admission price of $12, or $8 for children ages 3 to 12. Members and younger children get in free.
The garden is at 11030 East Blvd. in Cleveland’s University Circle. It’s also celebrating its child-friendly Big Spring event, so bring the kids.
Then on Wednesday, you can hear plant expert Bill Hendricks talk on Succulents in the Garden at Seiberling Nature Realm, 1828 Smith Road, Akron. Hendricks is president of Klyn Nurseries near Painesville. The talk starts at 7 p.m. and is part of the Summit County Master Gardeners’ Meet Me in the Garden series. Admission is free.
Farewell, ‘Psych’
The USA Network series ends its eight-season run at 9 p.m. Wednesday with the closing of the Psych office. That not only wraps things up for stars James Roday and Dule Hill, but for a couple of locally connected actors: Corbin Bernsen, also known for making movies in Akron, and Timothy Omundson, the husband of the former Allison Cowley, a 1981 Firestone High School graduate.
But don’t think this is career-ending. Omundson, for one, is set to play an evil king in Galavant, the pilot for an ABC fairy-tale comedy.
