Home and garden happenings — week of March 15

If you’re passionate about welcoming wildlife to your yard, you may be a candidate to become a certified habitat steward volunteer with the National Wildlife Federation.

Habitat steward volunteers promote and encourage watershed protection and help people create backyard habitats that are environmentally healthy and wildlife friendly.

Training for volunteers starts March 31. Registrations are due Wednesday.

Classes will meet from 6:30 to 9 p.m. March 31 and April 2, 7 and 9 at Brecksville Community Center, 1 Community Drive (off state Route 21). In addition, the trainees will take field trips from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. April 5 and 12.

The registration fee is $40. To sign up, call the Cuyahoga Soil & Water Conservation District office at 216-524-6580, ext. 22, or email aroskilly@cuyahogaswcd.org.

More information is at www.cuyahogaswcd.org.

Dream home contest

Your dream home could cost you $100.

That’s the price of a ticket for the St. Jude Dream Home Giveaway, which will award a house in Avon worth an estimated $400,000.

The fundraiser benefits St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis, Tenn.

Tickets go on sale Wednesday. If you’re interested, be prepared to act fast. Last year, tickets sold out in six hours, spokeswoman Morgan Kuhn said.

Details and a link to online sales will be at www.stjude.org/dhcleveland. You’ll also be able to order by phone at 800-834-5786.

Last year’s dream home was won by a Barberton resident, Joe Perry.
