Learn nature’s cues
When is the best time to treat for pests in your garden?
Don’t rely on a calendar to tell you. Rely on nature instead.
You can learn about recurring patterns in the natural world and how they’re interrelated at Gardening by Nature’s Calendar, a program at 7 p.m. Thursday at Eastwood Preserve House, 4712 Streetsboro Road, Richfield Township. That knowledge can help you anticipate plant and pest activity so you can manage your garden more effectively, with the least effort and environmental harm.
The program is presented by the Richfield Parks and Recreation Department in conjunction with the Summit County Master Gardeners. The cost is $5. To register, call 330-659-5818.
A movie and music
Now that you have survived this year’s Academy Awards, check out a winner from the past decade when select cinemas show Chicago today and Wednesday. Local theaters include Cinemark Tinseltown in North Canton, Cinemark Valley View and Regal Crocker Park.
The musical, based on the Broadway hit, was nominated for 13 Oscars and won six, including best picture, best director (Rob Marshall) and best supporting actress (Catherine Zeta-Jones).
Also starring Renee Zellweger and Richard Gere, the tale of crime and fame may yet surprise folks unfamiliar with the sexy, cynical story. One showing during its previous big-screen run included a lot of older women expecting, oh, The Sound of Music and then rather noisily expressing their dismay at seeing a PG-13 movie that inched close to an R.
Flamenco on stage
Few genres are filled with as much drama as Flamenco. The exacting, lustful dancing combined with the dramatic flair of the music make for a captivating combination of sight and sound.
On Wednesday night at 7:30 in the Gartner Auditorium, the Cleveland Museum of Art will play host to one of the genre’s contemporary superstars, Estrella Morente. Morente’s music has been heard on these shores in the Oscar-nominated Pedro Almodovar film Volver, and she has been twice nominated for Latin Grammys. Morente will be performing with guitarist Manolo Sanlucar as well as popular New Flamenco trio Ketama.
Tickets are $44–$69 at www.clevelandart.org.
Maple madness month
March in Ohio can only mean one thing: Maple Madness time.
The state’s maple syrup production is in full swing, and you can find plenty of stops on the Maple Madness Driving Tour, sponsored by the Ohio Maple Producers Association. There are plenty of stops in the greater Akron area, including Medina and Canton, but head north to Geauga County for the greatest concentration of producers.
Visit www.ohiomaple.org for a list of places to see syrup being made or to purchase syrup and other treats. Phone 440-834-1415 for information.
Learn book illustration
The Peninsula Art Academy is offering a four-week course in graphic novel illustration from 2 to 5 p.m. on Wednesdays, starting this week and running through April 2. Students will learn how their drawing must indicate the topic and theme of a book and how the characters must be well-defined and develop the story.
Students should have a basic knowledge of drawing and will need to bring certain basic supplies. Classes are $125. Call 330-657-2248.
