The To-Do List — week of March 2

Orchids on parade

Immerse yourself in the exotic allure of orchids at the Greater Akron Orchid Society show, which concludes today at Donzell’s Flower & Garden Center.

Orchids will be on display, and experts will be available to answer your questions. If you’re inspired, you can buy a plant from one of the vendors to take home.

The show is open from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Donzell’s, 937 E. Waterloo Road, Akron. Admission and parking are free.

Information on the show and the orchid society are at www.thegaos.org.

Head to a fish fry

Lent begins this week and plenty of local lodges, clubs and restaurants will host their annual fish fry dinners for the next seven Fridays.

Visit Wednesday’s food section for a complete listing of area fish frys, so you can find one near you to try out.

The art of music

The Canton Palace Theatre says its showing of 20 Feet from Stardom involves an “art film.” But while that suggests something low-budget, possibly with subtitles and an audience equal parts college students and graybeards wearing berets, 20 Feet has a far broader reach.

The documentary is about backup singers in the studios of Phil Spector and others, and in the groups behind stars like Bruce Springsteen and Sting. These are women whose voices have supported the success of better-known names, and at times been left out of the reflected glory of the stars. With interviews and profiles of the likes of Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Darlene Love, the movie is an art film in the way it showcases the artistry in the performers. And it is quite artfully done.

The showing is at 7:30 p.m. Thursday and admission is $5.

America on stage

If the phrase “ ’Cause there ain’t no one for to give you no pain” gets your toes tapping rather than enraging your inner grammarian, then the Hard Rock Rocksino at Northfield Park has a concert for you.

America, the soft-rock titans of the 1970s, will perform their hits including Horse With No Name, which contains that grammatically adventurous lyric. Original members Gerry Beckley and Dewey Bunnell are still cranking out tunes such as Ventura Highway, You Can Do Magic and their version of Muskrat Love.

The concert begins at 7:30 and is 21 and over. Rocksino is located at 10777 Northfield Road in Northfield. Tickets are $22.50-$50; call 330-908-7625.

Winter book sale

The Wooster Friends of the Wayne County Library is having a book sale from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Friday and 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday in the “Book Cellar” of the old library, 304 N. Market St., Wooster.

Thousands of books and some audio-visual items will be available, including history, biography, health and wellness, adult fiction, westerns, gardening, cookbooks, children’s and teen’s books, graphic novels, and support materials for teachers and home schooling.

Two sets are worthy of mention. The first is the Handbook of North American Indians, published in 1986 by the Smithsonian Institute. Fourteen of the original eighteen volumes are available. The second set is Grove’s Dictionary of Music and Musicians, 1980 edition, in 20 volumes.
