Girl Scouts of North East Ohio will begin their annual cookie sale on Jan. 6.
This year’s lineup includes eight varieties: Thin Mints, Samoas, Do-Si-Dos, Tagalongs, Trefoils, Savannah Smiles, Dulce de Leche and Thank U Berry Munch made by Little Brownie Bakers.
Cookies will be selling for $4 per box. The 50-cent price increase is the first in six years for the cookies.
This year’s sale also starts two weeks later than past years. Cookies will be delivered beginning March 8. Cookie booth sales at malls and other locations will open March 14. The sale will conclude March 30.
If you don’t know any scouts, you can call 888-9-THIN-MINT to order cookies or visit www.gsneo.org/cookies and click on the Cookie Locator to find a sale in your area. Android and iPhone users can download an app for locating cookies.
Learn about cooking
If you are over 60 and you have an interest in cooking, you can attend Hospitality Management classes at the University of Akron’s Summit College tuition-free through a special Sixty-Plus Program.
The program allows Ohio residents ages 60 and older to audit classes without paying tuition. College credit is not awarded.
Spring semester classes start Jan. 13. Students may enroll in one or two of the following classes: Introductions to Hospitality, Safety & Sanitation, Fundamentals of Food Prep, and Baking and Classical Desserts. Sixty-Plus students must pay for books, special fees and laboratory or instructional fees.
For more information on the Sixty-Plus Program, contact Summit College Advising at 330-972-7221 or the Hospitality Management Program, 330-972-6601 or visit www.uakron.edu/summitcollege/60plus/.
Setting things straight
• In the recipe for Ricotta Cookies in the 2013 Holiday Cookie special section, the oven temperature was omitted. Bake those cookies at 350 degrees. Also, while the recipe did not specify, you may want to drain your ricotta cheese if it is particularly watery. We’ve had one complaint about the batter being too runny and suspect it was from excess liquid in the cheese.
• A food note on Smoke-N-Joe’s BBQ and Soul Food included the wrong address for the restaurant. It is at 1458 Lake Road in Lakemore.
