People Helping People — Dec. 12

People Helping People is a list of charitable causes in our area that need donations or volunteers. The Beacon Journal has not investigated these causes, so donors should verify their worthiness and the tax-deductibility of contributions.

A link to a form for submitting requests to People Helping People can be found at www.ohio.com/charity, along with tips on researching charities and a list of causes already published.

South Akron Youth Mentorship, P.O. Box 26563, Akron, OH 44319, is a faith-based ministry that focuses on mentoring and educational efforts for children 5 to 19 who live along the Arlington Street corridor. The organization needs volunteers for its evening mentoring programs and its daytime reading tutoring program at David Hill elementary.

Training and background checks will be provided.

Northcoast Behavioral Healthcare, 1756 Sagamore Road, Northfield, OH 44067, is seeking volunteers to provide music programs, call bingo or provide seasonal and holiday presentations. Minimum age is 18.

Stewart’s Caring Place, 2955 W. Market St., Suite R, Fairlawn, OH 44333, provides free support services to individuals and families touched by cancer. It is seeking donors to “adopt” families for the holidays. The families have lost a parent to cancer.

The Salvation Army Summit County, 190 S. Maple St., Akron, OH 44302, is seeking volunteers to perform these tasks:

• Prepare bags of toys. Volunteers can work anytime between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. on any day except Sunday through Dec. 19.

• Ring bells at a Salvation Army Christmas kettle. Many locations are available with flexible scheduling.

• Help with the distribution of food and toys Dec. 20. Volunteers can work as long as they wish between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m.
