The To-Do List — week of Dec. 8

Pets meet Santa

Festivities will get furry during Pets Visit Santa, Saturday’s animal-friendly event at Donzell’s Flower & Garden Center.

Pet owners are invited to bring Fluffy or Fido to the garden center between noon and 4 p.m. to have a picture taken with Santa. Pictures are $8.

Donzell’s is at 937 E. Waterloo Road, Akron.

A day at the opera

James Levine conducts the Metropolitan Opera’s production of Falstaff, presented in movie theaters by Fathom Events at 12:55 p.m. Saturday as part of the Met’s Live in HD series. This is the Met’s first new staging of the opera since 1964.

Local venues include Regal Montrose Movies 12, Regal Severance Stadium 14 and Regal Hudson Cinema 10. Tickets are $24 for adults, $22 for seniors and $18 for children. There will be encore showings at 6:30 p.m. Dec. 18.

Show us tacky sweaters

Don’t forget to send us photos of your wild, tacky, silly or ugly Christmas sweaters. Slip them on, snap a photo and mail by Dec. 15 to Kim Hone-McMahan at the Akron Beacon Journal, 44 E. Exchange St., Akron, OH 44308. Or email to beaconphoto@thebeaconjournal.com with “Christmas sweater” in the subject line.

Make sure to include your name, the names and hometowns of anyone else in the picture, and your phone number.

We’ll publish some of our favorites during the holiday season.

Sample holiday wines

Head to Fishers Foods, 5215 Fulton Road, Jackson Township from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday for the store’s Holiday Wine and Beer tasting event.

Conundrum Red Wine and Leinenkugel’s Snowdrift Vanilla Porter will be among the libations available for tasting.

The event is free and includes a large array of appetizers to complement the beer and wine, which sell for 25 cents per taste.

Holiday tunes

Local singer/songwriter Ryan Humbert loves the holidays. He loves them so much that he is about to embark on his fifth annual Ryan Humbert Holiday Extravaganza at 7 p.m. Saturday at the Akron Civic Theatre, 182 S. Main St.

This year Humbert and his band will be joined by Maurice Martin of local award-winning soul/rock band Winslow; singer Mike Protich of local metal band Red Sun Rising; Scarlet, lead singer of Scarlet & the Harlots; and Cody J. Martin. And, while you wiggle in the orchestra pit-turned-dance-floor to jaunty renditions of Do You Hear What I Hear and (Christmas) Baby Please Come Home, you’ll be helping area nonprofit organization Mobile Meals.

Tickets are $20 at the Civic box office at 330-253-2488, at Ticketmaster outlets or at www.ticketmaster.com.
