Christmas on big screen
White Christmas, the 1954 musical comedy starring Bing Crosby and Danny Kaye, will be in selected Cinemark theaters at 2 p.m. today and at 2 and 7 p.m. Wednesday. It’s part of the chain’s showings of holiday movies, which also includes National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation on Dec. 8 and 11, and the original, James Stewart-starring It’s a Wonderful Life on Dec. 15, 18 and 24.
White Christmas should not to be confused with 1942’s Holiday Inn, the black-and-white feature that also had Crosby (along with Fred Astaire) and the song White Christmas. The newer film, which also starred Rosemary Clooney and Vera-Ellen, is a full-color spectacular with Kaye as war veterans who became a successful song-and-dance team; they end up helping their old commander, now running a New England inn. The Movie Guide praised its “great stars and catchy songs,” the latter by Irving Berlin.
A step back in time
Have you ever wondered how your ancestors celebrated Christmas?
