The To-Do List — week of Nov. 17

‘JFK’ revisited

As the 50th anniversary of the assassination of John F. Kennedy looms, two theater chains will present Oliver Stone’s JFK. Both Cinemark and Regal plan to show it in select theaters at 2 p.m. today and 2 and 7 p.m. Wednesday. Regal’s Crocker Park location and Cinemark’s in Valley View are among the venues; see www.cinemark.com and www.regmovies.com for a full list.

The title aside, the film focuses not on the late president but an investigation into his death; Kevin Costner stars as Jim Garrison, the New Orleans prosecutor convinced of a conspiracy. While Stone was widely criticized for taking historical liberties, he said the movie was “counter-fiction to the Warren Commission’s fiction.”

Nominated for eight Oscars, including best picture, it won for editing and cinematography. The film is also on DVD and Blu-ray, including in a director’s cut that runs almost 3½ hours. According to the theaters’ websites, Cinemark has scheduled the original theatrical version, which runs a little over three hours, while Regal is showing the director’s cut.
