Lockout of nurses at Youngstown hospital ends after 1-day strike

YOUNGSTOWN, OHIO: A lockout of registered nurses at a Youngstown hospital is ending while contract negotiations are still up in the air.

Most of 485 nurses at ValleyCare Northside Medical Center were scheduled to be back to work Friday with most returning to their jobs over the weekend and Monday.

ValleyCare spokeswoman Trish Hrina tells the Vindicator that a 72-hour period for hiring temporary workers will conclude soon.

Eric Williams, president of the Youngstown General Duty Nurses Association, said the one-day strike Tuesday didn’t restart contract talks but got nurses’ issues before the public, such as continuing a high standard of patient safety.

Hrina says the hospital’s offer allows nurses to carry out their professional responsibilities to patients.
