It’s Mum Fest time

Some 2,000 mums are expected to be in bloom during the festival, in gardens, in hanging baskets and covering the signature floral arch. Also on the schedule are water ski shows and other forms of entertainment, along with children’s activities, crafts and, of course, food.

The festival is open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and next Sunday at Lake Anna Park, Sixth Street Northwest and West Park Avenue. Admission is free.

Tea and history on train

Take a ride with history on Sept. 29, when the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad hosts a Tea with former first ladies Mary Lincoln and Lucretia Garfield.

The train departs at 3:20 p.m. from the Peninsula Depot and returns at 5:10 p.m.

Tea is catered by Tea & Thyme and includes salad, scones, pastries, tea sandwiches, tea and desserts.

Actors portraying first ladies Mary Todd Lincoln and Lucretia Garfield will be present to reminisce about their husbands, children, time in the White House and their life after their husbands’ assassinations.

Visit www.cvsr.com to purchase tickets, which are $50 for adults, and $28 for children.

Massillon film fest

Lions Lincoln Theater in Massillon will host the Fall Cinesation Film Festival, a lineup of vintage talkies and silent movies from Thursday through Sept. 29.

Selections include a “Slapstick Comedy Cavalcade,” five shorts made by Buster Keaton, Mack Sennett and others. Ben Model and Dr. Philip Carli will provide musical accompaniment, replicating the experience of seeing a movie in the theater in its early years. Having opened in 1915, the Lincoln is believed to be the oldest operating movie theater in the U.S.

Among the festival’s 18 feature-length movies is Pardon Us, a 1931 Laurel & Hardy movie that was their first full-size film.

For other films and ticket information, visit www.cinephiles.org, the website of the festival’s sponsor, the Great Lakes Cinephile Society.
