The U.S. Food and Drug Administration announced Tuesday that Natura Pet Products, Proctor & Gamble’s pet food division, has issued its third voluntary recall since March for possible salmonella contamination. Natura is voluntarily recalling specific lots of dry pet food because it has the potential to be contaminated with salmonella.

The latest recall, for specific lots of dry pet food, expands the recall to include all products manufactured prior to June 10.

A news release issued by Procter & Gamble says there have been no reports of pet illness reported, but follows the detection of salmonella in its dry food by an inspector in Michigan.

Brands included in the recall are Innova, California Natural, EVO, Mother Nature and Karma. The recalled products carry an expiration date before June 10, 2014. Additional recall details can be found at: http://www.naturapet.com/recall.

Salmonella can affect animals eating the products and there is risk to humans from handling contaminated pet products, especially if they have not thoroughly washed their hands after having contact with the products or any surfaces exposed to these products, according to the FDA notice.

Healthy people infected with salmonella should monitor themselves for some or all of the following symptoms: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, abdominal cramping and fever. Rarely, salmonella can result in more serious ailments, including arterial infections, endocarditis, arthritis, muscle pain, eye irritation, and urinary tract symptoms. Consumers exhibiting these signs after having contact with this product should contact their health-care providers.

Pets with salmonella infections may be lethargic and have diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever, and vomiting. Some pets will have only decreased appetite, fever and abdominal pain. Infected but otherwise healthy pets can be carriers and infect other animals or humans. If your pet has consumed the recalled product and has these symptoms, please contact your veterinarian.

These products were packaged in a single production facility.

The affected products are sold in bags through veterinary clinics, select pet specialty retailers, and online in the United States and Canada. No canned wet food is affected by this announcement.

The affected products are all lot codes for the following products with an expiration date of June 10, 2014:

Innova Dry dog and cat food and biscuits/bars/treats.

EVO dry dog, cat and ferret food and biscuits/bars/treats.

California Natural dry dog and cat foods and biscuits/bars/treats.

Healthwise dry dog and cat foods.

Karma dry dog foods.

Mother Nature biscuits/bars/treats.

Consumers who have purchased the specific dry pet foods listed should discard them.
