Q.: This may sound like a dumb question, but can you freeze flour?
— R.H., Warren
A.: Well, as they told us in grade school, the only dumb question is the one that doesn't get asked. Yes, you can freeze flour to extend its shelf life. Many bags of flour now come with a best-by date printed right on the bag. If not, flour typically is good for 12 to 18 months when stored in a cool, dry place. Keeping it in the freezer will extend that shelf life, particularly if you don't bake often.
The freezer also helps to keep away pantry moths that like to feast on flour.
