ShowHouse opening
Home-design enthusiasts, prepare to be inspired.
The Junior League of Akron’s Designer ShowHouse 2013 opens Saturday in West Akron. Professional designers bid to redecorate individual rooms of the Gaffney Estate, an 18-room Tudor Revival home built in 1933. Their creativity will be on display when the house is open for tours during three weekends in May.
Hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and next Sunday, as well as May 9 to 12 and 16 to 19.
Tickets are $20. They can be purchased at the door, at Acme Fresh Market stores in Summit County or on the Junior League’s website, www.juniorleagueakron.org.
And they’re off!
Get out your fancy hats, because Saturday is the 139th running of the Kentucky Derby.
Post time is 6:24 p.m., and the race will be televised live on NBC.
To celebrate in style, consider mixing up a batch of mint juleps or baking the chocolate-laced derby pie. Visit www.ohio.com/blogs/lisa for recipes for both.
Write Mom a love letter
Mother’s Day is two weeks away. On that day, moms’ telephones will ring from dawn to dusk. It is the busiest calling day of the year. But instead, or perhaps in addition to, the phone call to Mom, write her a love letter.
You still have time to construct a well-thought-out note telling her things like what she has meant in your life, the ways in which she molded you into the person you are today, and how much you appreciate her nursing your skinned knees back to health.
The telephone call is a wonderful gift for Mom, but she will tuck that personal letter someplace where she can read it over and over again.
Teens rock
So you missed out on seeing Ohio’s current arena-filling rock stars, The Black Keys, in their early days playing local bars? Well, here’s a chance to see the next generation of Northeast Ohio rock stars at the Teens Rock Akron 2013 concert at 6 p.m. Saturday, at the Akron-Summit County Main Library, 60 S. High St. in downtown Akron.
The teen artists performing include Erica Bitting, Libby Etherton, Kofi R. Boakye, The Independent, 4 Apart and Noize Basement. The concert is free. For more information, call the Main Library Teen Department at 330-643-9067, 330-643-9032 or visit www.akronlibrary.org.
“Voices” sneak preview
A video production of the play May 4th Voices will get a free sneak preview at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Kent Stage and then be televised by WNEO/WEAO (Channels 45/49) at 10 p.m. Friday. Replays will air at 10 p.m. Saturday and 8 p.m. May 6.
A book of the play and a teacher’s resource about it are also being published, and the telecast will be on DVD in June.
The play, written by David Hassler and directed by Katherine Burke, is based on the Kent State Shootings Oral History Project, which contains interviews about the shootings at Kent State University on May 4, 1970.
