Founding partners discuss BioInnovation Institute

Leaders from Akron’s three hospital systems, the University of Akron and Northeast Ohio Medical University issued the following statements when asked whether they intend to continue participation in the Austen BioInnovation Institute in Akron and, if so, at what level:

William Considine, president and chief executive, Akron Children’s Hospital:

“Akron Children’s is very supportive of ABIA. It’s been a truly wonderful return on an investment for our community. We’re looking forward to continuing our relationship as we have some conversation about the next stage of the institute. Frank Douglas’ leadership has been phenomenal. This has really benefited us in terms of physician recruitments and creating a synergy in town and being part of developing an ecosystem that brings our university, health-care providers and industry together.”

Akron General Health System:

“Akron General Health System is proud to be a founding member of the Austen BioInnovation Institute in Akron (ABIA). This partnership has greatly benefited the Akron community through the various research and work force education and training opportunities offered through the institute, and we value the important role ABIA plays in patient-centered innovation. Akron General is currently considering the renewal of our commitment, and we hope to announce our decision in the near future.”

Dr. Jay A. Gershen, president, Northeast Ohio Medical University:

“Northeast Ohio Medical University is proud to be a founding member of ABIA, and to have provided $4 million in funding support. This summer, we will be evaluating the options offered through ABIA’s new tiered membership structure, and determining the nature of our continued support and partnership.”

Thomas J. Strauss, president and chief executive, Summa Health System:

“We continue to believe in the work of the ABIA and its importance to the Greater Akron community. As a founding partner, we have seen great success on many initiatives and tremendous potential for the future. As a member of the board of directors, I know firsthand the collaboration that is occurring daily among our organizations. Similar to the other founding partners, we currently are in discussions to determine how to best continue our partnership beyond the end of our current agreement. While it’s premature to discuss exactly what that will look like, we look forward to continuing on this journey of transformation.”

Luis M. Proenza, president, University of Akron:

“The ABIA partners meet regularly to discuss strategy and funding. The new membership opportunities and evaluation of the benefits of membership are part of ongoing conversations. Our original funding agreement expires at the end of 2013, so it is a logical time to talk about how we can grow these collaborations for the benefit of the community. We at the University of Akron believe ABIA continues to play a vital role in strengthening this region’s growth in biomedical engineering and other innovative, health-related fields. ABIA was critical to bringing together the Food and Drug Administration and our own polymer scientists in a new partnership. Similarly, ABIA has partnered with UA’s Research Foundation (UARF) to bring in more federal funding to support commercialization of innovative ideas. We work together to help recruit some of the nation’s best and brightest to Akron to teach, research and invent. We believe ABIA continues to be an investment worth making in the future of Akron.”
