The community is invited to make stone soup and green laundry detergent at 10 a.m. next Saturday in Boeke Hall at St. Paul Parish, 1580 Brown St. in Akron.
Participants are asked to bring a chopped-up vegetable to be added to a large stone soup pot. The idea was derived from the old folk story, Stone Soup, in which hungry strangers come to a village carrying nothing but an empty cooking pot. Unable to persuade villagers to share food, the travelers go to a stream, fill the pot with water, drop a stone in and place the pot over a fire. When villagers inquire about what they are doing, the travelers reply that they are making stone soup. To make the soup taste better, the travelers ask villagers to share some ingredients. Villagers begin to share vegetables, making a full pot of soup possible. The story is typically shared as a lesson in cooperation.
While waiting for the pot of soup to simmer at St. Paul's, those in attendance will be invited to make an eco-friendly jug of laundry detergent to take home.
The event, in its second year, is hosted by the St. Paul Parish Social Justice Committee. For more information, call 330-724-126.
