Cher the movie wealth
Turner Classic Movies has been devoting Fridays in April to A Woman’s World: The Defining Era of Women on Film, a look at women’s portrayals on films from the 1930s to the 1950s. This week’s movies will deal with working women, starting with one of the great newspaper movies, His Girl Friday, at 8 p.m.
Based on the play and film The Front Page, it stars Cary Grant as an editor and Rosalind Russell as his top reporter — an ex-wife. Crackling dialogue and great chemistry. Also on the bill: Spencer Tracy and Katherine Hepburn in Woman of the Year (10 p.m.), Ginger Rogers as a wartime welder in Tender Comrade (midnight) and Jean Arthur working in a department store in The Devil and Miss Jones (2 a.m. Saturday). Robert Osborne and Cher host.
Daffodil days
With the spring flowers finally bursting into bloom, now’s a good time to take a hike on the H.S. Wagner Daffodil Trail.
An estimated 40,000 daffodils representing dozens of varieties bloom along the trail at Furnace Run Metro Park. The path takes visitors sixth-tenths of a mile through the heart of springtime.
The trail’s namesake was the first director-secretary of the park district, who planted the first bulbs along the trail in the late 1930s.
The trail starts at 3100 Brush Road, Richfield Township.
